Cockles are a type of bivalve mollusc.
If that's the connection, i don't think it's because they are heart-shaped. I think it's because something "warms the cockles of your heart" which are inside the hard shell you use to try and shut out the rest of the world and protect your heart from being broken.

Or maybe it's just that Latin word thing
