May Day

maypole.jpg

Well it isn't really May Day yet but I'll be in Reno tomorrow so I'll wish you happy May Day today. When I was in elementary school we used to celebrate May Day at school. There was a maypole with crepe paper streamers for us to dance about. I remember having to have a nice May Day dress and flowers were involved. I think the schools stopped celebrating May Day during the cold war because May 1st is also International Workers Day in Russia. So we stopped dancing around poles to prove we aren't communists.

"Mayday" is also a distress signal though I've never known why. With the magic of the internet tubes now we can all know. Today it is not a distress call so you don't need to rescue me. Happy May Day.

*snort* the guy who came up with the term was nicknamed "Big Johnson."

We celebrated May Day when I was in grade school, too, although I don't know what it is a celebration for, exactly. I remember we had a maypole and we also made kites one year (I really liked that, as I am a huge fan of kites).

Maypoles sound like fun, but doesn't the crepe paper rip from kids tugging on it too hard?

I don't remember it that way but it was a long time ago. Of course when I was a child we were all very genteel.
