For PSY 101 classes, students must complete at least 4 credits of experiments and/or article summaries. For other psychology courses, it is up to the instructor if you want to require credit, offer extra credit, or to do neither. It is also up to the instructor as to how much credit is required or available. Instructors of PSY 101 can require more credits and/or offer extra credit for completing additional credits.
If you are going to require credit or offer extra credit, please contact the Subject Pool Coordinator at the beginning of the semester with the following:
-The number of required and/or extra credit available
-The number of students in your class
You will receive a handout that you can distribute to your course. Be sure that you are clear to the students as to how participation will affect their grades and to direct your students to the Subject Pool website to learn how to earn credit. If you use WebCampus or a website please provide a link to the Subject Pool website. Also, be sure to have your students register in Experimetrix and to choose your course when they login.
During the last week of classes, the Subject Pool Coordinator will provide you with a list of the research credits for your students. Students have only a couple of days to correct any errors in this list before the terms ends.
To check your students' credit balance on your own, use the login and password the Subject Pool Coordinator sent you. From the "Select View" menu, select your course. The page should refresh, and you will see a list of your students who have completed credit. The "credit balance" column lists their total credits (minus penalties). You might also want to look at the students who never picked a course or instructor to make sure none of yours ended up in the list.
Sample Text for your Course Syllabus (Instructors can edit this or use the verbatim text below):
Research Activity: All students are REQUIRED to complete 4 credits worth of research activity. Students may participate in psychology experiments conducted at UNLV. Each hour of participation is worth 1.0 credit (half hour = 0.5 credit). Students can also earn credits by writing a paper that summarizes and answers questions of published psychological studies available at the library. Each satisfactory article summary is worth 1.0 research credit. Credits can be earned through a combination of experiments and article summaries. Not completing the required credits will result in your final grade being reduced by one letter grade. Students are not allowed to use credits earned during a prior semester. Details about the research activity are posted on the Subject Pool website (http://PSYCHOLOGY.UNLV.EDU)
and follow the “Subject Pool” links. The website provides details such as deadline info. Please check your credits-discrepancies or errors must be cleared up before the final day of regular classes. Finally, you must activate an Experimetrix account before you can receive credit (it may take a few days to activate your account).
