Collections:
UNLV Special Collections holds a number of manuscript collections relating to the history of Las Vegas. These include the papers of Las Vegas pioneers such as Helen J. Stewart, Charles "Pop" Squires, James Cashman, and Harley Harmon. There are a number of papers documenting the history of mining in the southern Nevada area, and the business records of the San Pedro, Los Angeles Salt Lake Railroad, Union Pacific, and Las Vegas-Tonapah Railroad. The department's Gaming Studies Research Collection holds probably the largest collection of gambling- related research material in the world including promotional and publicity documents from numerous hotels and casinos. The history of entertainment in Las Vegas is also documented by a number of collections such as the papers of hotels such as the Sands, Dunes, Frontier, Desert Inn, and Thunderbird. The papers of show producers such as Donn Arden, Matt Gregory, Harold Minsky and Jess Mack are also represented. Other unique collections include the business records of the Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO) and the files of William Hannah, PR Director for Howard Hughes. Architectural collections include the work of Martin Stern and Homer Rissman. The Nevada Women's Archives form a subset of the collection and include the papers of a number of notable Las Vegas women. The department also holds the archives of the Arnold Shaw Research Center for Popular Music which includes the papers of notables such as Arnold Shaw, Bill Willard, and Wingy Manone. Photograph collections document a range of subjects including the city's early days, Fremont Street, Hoover Dam, the Las Vegas Strip, the Las Vegas Valley, showgirls, and entertainers from numerous hotels, most notably the Rat Pack. The collection also holds a growing number of oral histories of notable Las Vegans. :
