My primary goal is to empower others to understand and conduct research. I pursue this goal in both my teaching and my research. My teaching focuses on empowering students to understand and use statistical and methodological tools in research. In the classroom, I teach students to use basic and advanced statistical techniques, to write research reports, and to create online studies. Outside the classroom, I involve undergraduates and graduates in all stages of the research process: study design, data collection, scoring, statistical analyses, write-up, and presentation at conferences and in journal articles. As of March 2008, I have supervised 97 undergraduate and graduate students in my research lab, most of whom have been in my lab for multiple semesters. I have received awards for outstanding teaching from the Alumni Students Association, Learning Enhancement Services, and the College of Liberal Arts, and I have been nominated for awards from the Western Psychological Association and the National Residence Hall.
My research and publications build a bridge between the typical psychologist and the complex statistical and methodological tools that are available. Some of my publications are theoretical pieces, written in the language of statistics and formulas, meant to be read by other psychometricians. Many of my more recent publications are applied pieces, written to demonstrate innovative techniques in the context of psychological research, meant to be read by researchers and students in psychology. By describing innovative techniques in context, I make it easier for readers to understand the purpose, function, and limitations of these techniques, and the relevance of these techniques to their own research. My research has addressed several different content areas. Much of my research has focused on the evaluation and development of innovative measurement strategies in the area of Emotional Intelligence. In the next few years, I intend to expand my research on three innovative measurement methods: variations on consensus scoring, computerized scoring of open-ended tests, and scoring keys based upon structural criteria rather than content. My recent work has focused on online data collection, quality data entry, and incremental reliability.
I received my PhD in Psychometrics from the University of British Columbia in 2001. I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas from 2001 – 2007, and in 2007 I was promoted to Associate Professor. |
| |
I have recently graduated with a Masters in Psychology from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and been recently accepted in the Doctoral Program in Experimental Psychology. I intend to graduate either in Fall or Spring 2009/2010. My background research background during my MA program placed an emphasis on research regarding mental health in older adults, however, I am currently interested in acculturation as a predictor of well-being. In the lab, I have been a poster leader and guided two lab discussions on writing a curriculum vitae and choosing a mentor in graduate school. I am currently looking for research assistants for my dissertation which will look at cultural impacts on emotional intelligence. After I graduate I intend to look for a position in academia so I can teach and continue my research endeavors. |

I have had many great experiences and opportunities participating in the lab. I have learned how to design study materials, write IRB proposals, administer studies, score an open ended test for emotional awareness, write training materials for various programs, create presentations on life skills, and have held various management positions including Lab Website Coordinator, first author on a poster, project leader, and Assistant Lab Manager. This semester I am the Lab Manager, continuing a project that is focused on updating a scoring manual for an open ended test of emotional awareness, as well as developing more presentations and workshops. My future plans include graduating in the spring of 2010 and then going on to get my PhD in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in lifestyle improvement focusing on physical and emotional wellness and how the two are interconnected.

I am now in my ninth semester of Dr. Barchard’s lab. I have been supervising the data entry study for three semesters now and will be continuing supervision on training for a new study that we are starting in October. I presented two posters at WPA and I also presented a poster at APS in San Francsico. I spent most of my summer volunteering as a mentor for the Summer Business Institute. There, I had the pleasure of working with high school students and found my passion. I will be applying to graduate school in the fall and I plan on graduating in the spring of 2010. I have decided on pursuing a masters in couseling and education.

I joined Dr. Barchard's lab in the summer of 2008, and am currently working for my fourth semester. After being recruited by Dr. Barchard and excelling in her PSY 210 class, I joined the lab in order to learn valuable tools that I could use throughout my undergraduate and graduate school careers. Since I've joined
the lab, I have updated the Word, Excel, and Powerpoint Workshops for 2007,
completed and presented various workshops to fellow lab members, and have been
trained to hand score the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale. In a previous
semester, Viri and I created a professional conference poster, which I
presented at WPA this past year in Portland, Oregon. We created an entirely new
blaming scale, and scored the LEAS in terms of blaming others. I have also been a
poster leader, and created another professional conference poster. I currently
plan on graduating from UNLV, and hope to attend Law School. |

I joined the Interactive Measurement Group during the Spring 2008 semester, and this semester will be my fifth in the lab. I have developed several valuable research and leadership skills as a member. I have been trained in various workshops regarding computer programs and services, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and GoogleDocs. I have proofread and provided feedback on a professional paper regarding Microsoft Excel data entry and a graduate-level project concerning on-line data collection. I have co-authored two conference posters, both for which I was second author. One conference poster has been presented at the 2009 UNLV Undergraduate Research Conference, and the other poster will be submitted for presentation at the 2010 WPA. I have administratively recorded the lab and poster hours of lab members, and I have assisted in the revision of workshops. I have been trained on how to administer the Data Entry Study and have administered it. Additionally, I have lead a project team that aimed to learn about various methods to score data. During this semester, I plan to present a workshop with another lab member. During the spring of 2010, I endeavor to graduate in the with a degree in Psychology. Upon graduation, I hope to either attain a PhD in Clinical Psychology or pursue law school to earn a JD and become an attorney.

This will be the start of my third year at UNLV. I am majoring in Psychology and plan on graduating in May of 2010. After graduation I plan to attend graduate school at the University of Washington (UW). My goal is to become a Child Clinical Psychologist and the UW has a Child Clinical psychology PhD program that would help me do just that.
This will be my third semester in the Interactive Measurement Group. In just one semester I have learned so much: I have created my own personal website, began to design a website that will be used in a future study called the Data Checking Study, learned how to score the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS) by hand and was project leader of a group that is revising the LEAS Scoring Manual. This semester I will continue leading the LEAS Training team and lead a new poster project.
